The CAFE Lab

  • Extracts actionable intelligence from complex real-world data in cybersecurity and beyond.
  • Ensures security, accountability, fairness, and explainability in AI-driven decisions.
  • Safeguards both human and AI-driven decision-making processes against manipulation, bias, and adversarial compromise.
  • Creates hands-on learning opportunities for students.
  • Drives innovation through collaboration with academic, industry, and government partners.

Research Focus

Cybersecurity
  • Interpretable AI-Based Security Systems – Fast, robust, and interpretable AI-based defenses against zero-day and emerging threats.
  • Cognitive & Security Threat Mitigation – AI tools to counter both cognitive and cybersecurity threats across diverse scenarios—from low-information social engineering to data-rich malware forensics.
Social Good
  • Applying data, science, humanities, and AI to address humanitarian and environmental challenges worldwide.
Health Informatics
  • Leveraging social networks, medical data, and AI to improve diagnostics, treatment, and patient outcomes.

Collaboration

  • We are happy to collaborate to make AI-based systems secure, fair, and explainable—while addressing real-world challenges.
  • We are eager to collaborate with—though not limited to—cyber-physical system operators (electric grids, gas, and water utilities), government agencies (NSF, DoD, DARPA, IARPA), advocacy groups for neurodiverse and underserved communities, and high-stakes industries such as cybersecurity (intrusion detection, forensics), healthcare (AI diagnostics, decision support), and finance (fraud detection, risk management).
  • We welcome motivated undergraduate and graduate students to contribute to our lab’s impactful research. If interested, please contact us by email.
